What I actually read in Groys’ s article is the attempt to re-conceptualize contemporary art from a material perspective. The destabilization of aesthetic notions of (traditional) art as a consequence of the emerging materiality shown and emphasized by contemporary art, determines, Groys contends, a radical shift of perspective from consumption to production. Interestingly, while contemporary art (installations, for instance) seems to encourage associations with forms of elitism, in fact, it is much related to mass culture, as it offers a space where the materiality we are confronted with in our daily life is investigated, and critically analyzed. It is within this “holistic,” critical space that contemporary art “is able to demonstrate the materiality of things beyond their exchange value.” (9) This, of course, has also consequences on the way the individual relates to and experience art.

I would like to note that Groys’ s attention to the materiality of things is part of a wider trend in academic researches and outlook. I take this opportunity to draw your attention to the amazing scholarship of prof.
